Step 1: with your dog in a sitting position, lure with a treat down and back (L-shaped motion) from your dog’s nose. Mark/Reward when their belly touches the ground.
Step 2: repeat, but reward with a treat from the other hand.
Step 3: repeat, but lure with an empty hand using what will become your “down” hand signal.
Step 4: Add in distance
Step 5: When confident your dog will succeed, add in the verbal cue “down” right before the hand signal.
We’re using a clicker in this video because it is a great way to mark the desired behavior at the exact moment it happens.
Also, “all the way” is an advanced add on to signal Emma into a sploot. Since Emma does this naturally, we captured it with a verbal cue until she learned the meaning.
